Ingredients:

  • Ash gourd (Ilavan):250gm
  • Black eyed peas(vanpayar):100 gm
  • Green chilli: 4 nos
  • Coconut : 1/2 coconut
  • Ginger piece : A small pieces (Chop into small pieces)
  • Salt : needed
  • Curry leaves : 2 stems
  • Coconut oil -3 tsp

Preparation:

Peel off the Ash gourd (Ilavan), and cut into small sized pieces as in the below picture. Then clean it properly.

Cook Ash gourd (Ilavan) pieces in a pan or vessel with water( 1/4 glass water), green chilis slices, chopped ginger, 1 tbs of salt and 2 stems of curry leaves.

Soak Black eyed peas(vanpayar) overnight and cook in pressure cooker for 2 whistles. Allow to cool and remove excess water.

Preparing coconut milk

We need to take coconut’s first milk and second milk:

Mix the grated coconut and water( 1 glass water) in a mixer, Filter the milk from the coconut and set aside.
This is coconut’s first milk.

Then mix the remainder of coconut in 1 cup water and mix it using mixer.
Take the milk from it.This is coconuts second milk.

Second milk is not so thick, because we prepare it from remaining coconut after taking first milk.

Once Ash gourd cooked half ,add cooked black eyed peas.Then pour this coconut’s second milk. Mix it well and cook for 3 to 4 minutes. Once Ash Gourd cooked well in coconut milk, pour coconuts first milk and allow to mix all together well for 1 minute. Then off the flame. In this add 2 tbs of coconut oil and mix well.

Olan is ready to serve.
